Hydrodynamic regimes and drag on horizontally pulled floating spheres

چکیده

We use high-speed imaging to investigate the movement of a floating sphere pulled horizontally along water surface. The model is 10 cm in diameter and has half density resulting half-submerged static sphere. By varying pulling force, we flow dynamics subcritical Reynolds number range, Re ≈ 2 × 104 105. characterize three hydrodynamic regimes with increase which refer as: low Froude number, Fr < 0.6, intermediate, 0.6 1.2 high > regimes. In regime, moves little disturbance surface drag close on fully submerged intermediate pronounced wave pattern developed together dipping below level leads an force. Based potential approximation for downward force moving surface, derive semiempirical relation as function number. Finally, switches mode periodic surfacing above vertical motion portrays decrease average

Wave drag on floating bodies.

We measure the deceleration of liquid nitrogen drops floating at the surface of a liquid bath. On water, the friction force is found to be about 10 to 100 times larger than on a solid substrate, which is shown to arise from wave resistance. We investigate the influence of the bath viscosity and show that the dissipation decreases as the viscosity is increased, owing to wave damping. The measure...

Translational drag coefficients of assemblies of spheres with higher-order hydrodynamic interactionsa)

Calculations were made of the anisotropic translation drag coefficients of rigid assemblies of spheres in a variety of arrays, including lines, circular equilateral polygons, disks (polygons with a central sphere), and stacked squares. The objective was to compare results obtained using polynomial expansions for the two-body hydrodynamic interaction tensor truncated at the (a/r) 1 , (a/r)3, (a/...

Hydrodynamic stress on fractal aggregates of spheres

We calculate the average hydrodynamic stress on fractal aggregates of spheres using Stokesian dynamics. We find that for fractal aggregates of force-free particles, the stress does not grow as the cube of the radius of gyration, but rather as the number of particles in the aggregate. This behavior is only found for random aggregates of force-free particles held together by hydrodynamic lubricat...

Hydrodynamic drag and lift forces on human hand/arm models.

Forces acting on the forearm and hand during swimming can be decomposed into drag forces and lift forces. In this study drag and lift forces were measured on two models of a human hand and forearm when towed in a towing tank. To compare the results of models with different size at different velocities force data were normalized to drag and lift coefficients (Cd and Ct). Influence of the orienta...

Terminal velocity and drag reduction measurements on superhydrophobic spheres

Super water-repellent surfaces occur naturally on plants and aquatic insects and are created in the laboratory by combining micro or nano-scale surface topographic features with hydrophobic surface chemistry. When such types of water-repellent surfaces are submerged they can retain a film of air (a plastron). In this work, we report measurements of the terminal velocity of solid acrylic spheres...
